A contemporary garden room extension adds new life to beautiful period dwelling
This property occupies a breath-taking elevated site which has panoramic views across open countryside. The Client wanted to create additional space for their kitchen, so that they could sit and dine whilst taking in the views.
"It was amazing to see just how much of a difference this modest addition has made to this lovely home in terms of creating a more spacious family kitchen. In doing so, the design has allowed the house to fulfil its potential by integrating beautifully with the garden and the stunning landscape surroundings."
Full height glazed walls form three sides of the garden room extension and stone walls create the new entrance hall serving the front of the house and these are capped by a slender cantilevered roof overhang which incorporates subtle downlighting.
The graphite grey zinc roof has a hidden gutter to achieve clean lines and two large electric operated roof windows allow plenty of natural light deep into the heart of the extension and into the existing kitchen.
The contemporary design approach is evident in other elements of the scheme, such as the new stone flagged sitting terrace and steps down from the house, which incorporate natural stonework with the frameless glass balustrade. This also shows the importance of designing the treatment of external areas associated with extensions in order to ensure that the project fulfils its potential.
The hand-drawn sketches show how the initial design ideas have been carefully developed and articulated to create this contemporary addition to the existing house. This project shows how it is possible to achieve a sympathetic balance between new and old through appropriate design and use of materials, in order to create exciting architecture!
